A WELCOME THREE CENTURIES IN THE MAKING

A timeless retreat, with four guest houses and 2 staff cottages, all imbued with simple, enduring elegance— authenticity that time has spared for few privileged properties. Within easy walking distance of the picturesque, mediaeval village of Valbonne, this estate and its former monastery dating from 1697, watch over the Provençal countryside, silent guardians of three centuries of history and an enduring art of living. Behind its stone walls, the exposed beams and time- worn façades carry the memory of those who shaped them. Today, the estate blends comfort with modernity, with 5 bedrooms in the Manor house, several charming reception rooms, together with indoor and sheltered outdoor dining areas and terraces, overlooking the gardens and acres of private parkland. All around, centuries-old olive trees trace their silvery silhouettes, wisteria in bloom cascades along the façades, while the air is filled with the scents of fresh grass and sun-warmed stone.

WHERE HISTORY BREATHES

LE MANOIR ·

T he story of La Sylviane begins in the XII ᵗʰ century, when the monks of the Order of Saint-Honorat founded the monastery of Valbonne. The monastery that still stands on the estate was completed in 1679 and served as the agricultural arm of the village, supplying milk, meat, wine and olive oil to the monks and extending over a hundred hectares of land. An underground tunnel linked it to the village monastery; it can still be seen today. In the early XIX ᵗʰ century, the property was granted to one of Napoleon's generals as a reward for his services in battle. It owes its present name to a later owner, who chose it after his daughter Sylvie; her sister Louise giving her name to the neighbouring estate, La Louisianne. D uring the Second World War, La Sylviane sheltered prisoners of war escaping the German occupation. This clandestine chapter was related to the present family by Camille Rayon, leader of the Resistance in the south of France. After the war, the estate passed to the Comte du Boisrouvray, cousin of Prince Rainier of Monaco. his mother, the Comtesse de Polignac, — of a family renowned for its cognac and close to the Grimaldi dynasty, resided at the estate. I n 1973, La Sylviane was acquired by the present family, who have cared for it ever since. Its century-old olive trees still produce an award-winning oil — up to 700 litres a year — perpetuating, eight centuries on, the agricultural vocation of the monks who first shaped these lands.

The main residence is built around an inner courtyard , opening onto reception rooms beneath exposed beams. A private lift discreetly serves the upper floors, weaving contemporary comfort into ancient walls without disturbing their soul.

An outsized swimming pool and its pool house , Gym and barbecue invite long summer hours, a tennis court appears between the olive trees, and a fitness room , set within the outbuildings, extends the spirit of the estate into everyday life.

A rare residence, where every stone, every hectare, every detail serves the same promise, that of a place to live, to enjoy, to share, simply, sheltered from time.

The tennis court

Tucked among the olive groves, the grass tennis court lies open to the Provençal sky, framed by the silhouettes of century-old trees. Played at the rhythm of the seasons, it offers one of the rarest pleasures of the estate — a game of tennis with the whole of Provence as a backdrop.

Set apart from the residences, the heated swimming pool unfolds against a sweep of emerald lawn, framed by olive trees and Provençal sky. Beside it, the pool house — built in stone and timber in the spirit of the estate — opens onto the pool, sheltering long lunches and quiet evenings.

Set within the great gardens, a few steps from the principal residence, the pétanque court invites the gentlest of Provençal rituals. Played beneath the trees in the long light of late afternoon, it carries the spirit of the village square into the heart of the estate.

Over acres of Provençal countryside, the olive grove draws across the estate, anchoring it in a landscape unchanged for generations. Its century-old trees still yield each year an oil of distinction — the living echo of a vocation eight centuries in the making.

Standing among the olive trees, a forme water tower rises a little apart from the main residence. Transformed into two bedrooms and bathrooms offer a self- contained dwelling for staff, set in the quiet of the grove, close enough to serve the rhythm of the estate, far enough so as not to disturb.

Set discreetly just outside the gates, the caretaker's house keeps its quiet watch over the estate. Built in the same stone as the residences and woven into the landscape, it ensures the steady, attentive presence on which a domain of this kind depends — the gentle pulse of daily life carried on, season after season.
